The issue with the game loading from disk after each step is problably because that's the way that the game works, or due to the way the cracker has made his version of that game work, although it is bad. So long as you have the Maximum 1541 Speed option set to ON, then this should reduce the load-waiting time.
E-mail me on stuart.toomer@ntlworld.com and I'll e-mail you another version of the game with documents and map.

: Wow, thank you for the quick response! I really appreciate it. That answers most of my questions but brought up a few more if you have a moment. =)
: I am guessing the the old and new FREEZE states are partially compatible since I am able to load it with XP Pro and 2.0B. It works fine until I run into a disk swap in game.
: You are correct about the D: drive. It wasn't CD-ROM but a D: partition for data. With XP Pro I just formatted it as one NTFS partition so my gaming subdirectory is on the C: drive now.
: Two quick questions. I did post a long time ago on the gamebase64 boards and I was told "Your out of luck" and no way to make a proper character disk. At that point I didn't pursue it any further but that was quite some time ago. Would you happen to know where I might be able to look into a creating or downloading a disk that would work properly for AR:TD?
: Also I will probably stay with XP is there any possible way to get AR:TD to work without loading every step? Basically it is the old style dungeon where one step is one square (actually like 3 steps to a square), but easily mappable on graph paper and each step in game accesses the disk (i.e. It flashes gray and white back and forth loading for a moment. Which makes it next to impossible to play with the constant loading. You say it isn't a CCS64 issue but a Windows issue. I am guessing then it is more or less not really anyone's issue just a compatibility issue that is beyond the scope of doing much with the current OS build?
: I grew up in the Commodore era (gaming side, non technical) first playing around with the Commodore VIC and Pet with it's whooping 32k of memory. ) I will definitely do a dual OS or setup a smaller 98SE PC just for playing the good 'ol games like Pirates, Phantasie, AR:TD, etc. They are awful by todays standards or anyone who didn't live that era but they are very nostalgic and bring back great memories for me of all night gaming sessions!
: Thank you very much for all your time and help. You have a terrific page and a wonderful emulator keep up the fantastic work!!
: : Some answers:
: : 1. Old/new freeze state file formats are not compatible with each other.
: : 2. You may need a special data disk with AR:TD, rather than just a blank disk (D64), to save your characters to. Some games require patched disks.
: : 3. CCS64 remembers where it last loaded a game from, hence the Drive D: problem (presumably you used a CD-ROM).
: : 4. A disk track-reading bug was fixed in a later version of CCS64 (refer to the History file).
: : 5. Some people do have problems running the emulators on Windows XP - better staying with Windows 98 SE instead. This is a Windows XP issue, not a CCS64 issue, since CCS64 works fine with all other previous versions of Windows.

: : : I am having some trouble getting CCS to work with Alternate Reality. I used to run Windows 98SE with the 'older' version of CCS64 and it ran fine. I was never able to create save character disks with ANY version of ARTD I found so instead just used the FREEZE feature that worked great. I tried CCS64 in XP Pro and it would blow up with an error about unable to read drive D: Abort, Retry or Fail. So I downloaded CCS 2.0B and it would load from a freeze state just fine but when I would come against a load/disk swap it will not except the disk. It acts like I am inserting the wrong disk. So I restarted the game from scratch (i.e. - Insert disk 1 and loaded it). It loaded fine but every step I take in the game it loads from disk. Even setting it at a high load speed it is awful. The screen blanks for a second and then you can take another step, load, step, load, step. You get the idea. )
: : : Anyway I have finished the game and have a FREEZE state at the end and was wondering if it is a issue with XP Pro or some thoughts on how to get it up and running properly. I noticed the track currently read in the drive state was 8 while the older emulator was track 1, not sure if that has any bearing. Also are FREEZE states in the newer version backward compatible? It runs fine in XP except when it comes to loading a FREEZE state or the 'step load' when loaded from scratch. I am not sure how to troubleshoot this one and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
